Corps: ‘yea or nay of RiverStone venture not its responsibility - 2004-03-06
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers can't authorize or refuse RiverStone Group's proposed Big Island project, although Rock Island city and company leaders reported this week the agency makes that choice, the Corps stated Friday.

The city council supported two special-use permits so RiverStone can establish a sand-and-gravel mining pit, a processing plant and a retail sales office on Big Island. Aldermen was also in accord to annex just over 200 acres, including the project locations and land for the Casino Rock Island expansion.

Washoe unemployment rate rises sharply - 2004-03-06
Unemployment in Washoe County rose sharply a full point to 5 percent in January from December, but the increase is typical for the post-holiday winter season, the state explained Friday.
Additionally, there were 300 fewer hotel-casino-related jobs, reflecting the consistant slump in gaming in the Reno-Sparks region due in part to Indian gaming in California.

But Washoe’s wholesale trade and manufacturing sectors demonstrated no change in job numbers, the report indicated.
