Tax Paths To Indian Casinos - 2004-03-06
A veteran pro-gambling legislator declared this week that he intends to introduce legislation requiring $3 tolls on public roads leading to American Indian casinos, which aren't subject to state gambling taxes.

Federal legislation permits sovereign Indian nations recognized by the U.S. Department of the Interior to run casinos on reservation land, with specific conditions. The Poarch establishments provide video bingo machines and other electronic gaming comparable to slots and video poker. There are no table games such as blackjack and craps.

Downtown casino brings forth mixed opinions - 2004-03-06
Some downtown and city officials are betting that a proposed $2 million Sac and Fox casino being planned for the old Sears building at 201 E. Main could create new life in Shawnee's downtown.

But the quest to fill the long-vacant, city-owned structure and provide another entertainment facility downtown is counter-balanced with worry over crime, moral issues about gambling, scarce parking and how the casino would impact the developing atmosphere of the region.
