Man confesses using arms in casino robberies - 2004-03-08
A man suspected of federal crimes in a series of casino robberies in Billings and Butte in 2002 made a guilty plea to two firearms charges that will lead to a lengthy prison sentence.

Dana Canfield, 43, made a guilty plea Friday in U.S. District Court in Billings to using a Ruger .22-caliber revolver when he held up the Jackpot Casino, 2030 Main St., on May 6, 2002, and to using the same gun in holding up the Joker's Wild Casino in Butte on July 27, 2002.

Gambling Vote Unsuccessful By One - 2004-03-08
The Legislature's casino gambling bid is likely dead for the session. A vote to stop a filibuster Monday fell one vote short of the 33 required. That means the proposed constitutional amendment is off the agenda for the day and will not return unless the speaker of the Legislature determines to put it back.

The measure's sponsor, Sen. DiAnna Schimek, of Lincoln, stated it most probably is dead for the year. Schimek had wanted to put a measure on the November ballot approving up to two casinos in Nebraska.
